# About GreptimeDB Version Number

GreptimeDB follows [Semantic Versioning](https://semver.org/) and uses version numbers in the form `MAJOR.MINOR.PATCH`. For example, in `1.2.3`:

- `1` is the major version.
- `2` is the minor version.
- `3` is the patch version.

## Major release(1)

The major version changes when a release contains incompatible API or behavior changes. Upgrading to a new major version may require changes to clients, configuration, or deployment procedures, so review the release's upgrade notes before migrating.

## Minor release(2)

The minor version changes when a release adds backward-compatible functionality. A minor release can introduce SQL features, APIs, configuration options, or operational capabilities while keeping existing public interfaces compatible.

## Revision number(3)

The patch version changes when a release contains backward-compatible bug fixes, security fixes, or performance improvements. Patch releases do not intentionally introduce incompatible changes to public interfaces.
